Academic Discussion

This video explains the postmodern position on truth, which supports the argument about truth in my thesis statement. Postmodernism holds that there is a spectrum of truths that are created by society which are not all created equally. This suggests that what is considered as the truth could be modified or changed completely based on new situations and new information available. Just like in other cases where the majority rules, it is unlikely that the majority will retain their consensus on what they believe to be true indefinitely. The fluid dynamics of a majority provide the mechanism for truth to change or to be replaced as time goes on.

V for Vendetta Revolution Speech

This movie clip provides a modern media connection to the argument in my thesis statement and the quotes from Invisible Man. In the movie V for Vendetta the main character, V, attempts to convince the citizens of London that the comforting truth they have about their government is a complete sham and that in fact the government is committing and facilitating torture, unfair punishment, and prejudice. The character V demonstrates the power of Nietzsche's words  “Convictions are more dangerous enemies of truth than lies.” (pg 63). In the end the strength of V's convictions are what lead to the adoption of the new truth that the government needs to be taken down.
